Fall Planting Tips & Tricks

  • It’s Time to Plant! Fall is ideal for planting in the Panhandle because warm soul encourages root establishment, before dormancy, while cool air reduces heat stress. It’s the perfect environment to prepare your plants for the heatwave summer season that comes around before we know it.
  • Focus on Frost Protection: As we all know, cold snaps can plunge temperatures quickly. Protect vulnerable species like citrus and tender perennials by using frost clothes or burlaps—avoid plastic directly touching foilage—and water soil thoroughly before a hard freeze to help retain heat.
  • Mulch Deeply: Mulch is very useful during the colder seasons as it helps to retain moisture and retain temperatures. Applying a 3-4 inch layer of organic mulch such as pine straw or shredded bark around root zones will help insulate roots against sharp temperature drops and retain moisture during dry fall spells.
  • Water Strategically: Winter air is dry, and dormant plants still need occasional hydration. Water during mid-day hours so roots absorb moisture before nighttime freezes.
